Inspired by the endeavour of the Talisker distillery founders and brothers, Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill, famed for their intrepid row from Eigg across The Cuillin Sound to Skye. Talisker is releasing only 1,830 bottles of this rare whisky from a selection of just 10 casks.
This special 43 Year Old whisky is the oldest official release by the Talisker distillery, which is the oldest on the visceral Isle of Skye. This expression is the quintessence of the Talisker style and character; shaped by the sea with its signature peppery sea salt, smoky sweetness – nurtured for over 4 decades in oak to produce something truly spectacular.
The colour of an Amber sunset, rich layers of aroma; the hot, sun-blanched canvas and varnished wood of the boat cleared by a swirling Mistral uncovering a faintly smoky, bees-wax base. This Talisker has a smooth texture and a vibrant, juicy start, before lightly drying, like salt spray on deck, then a peppery warmth seems to bring to an end the wonderfully long, mid-summers night of chili-pepper warmth that suffuses the whole palate.
Housed in a beautifully handcrafted wooden box that is adorned with an artist’s depiction of James Aiken’s spirited sailboat, The Oaken Yarn, crossing the Atlantic waves. Each box contains a piece of a stave from the journey, as well as a beautiful booklet that conveys the story of the expedition.
The oldest distillery on the Isle of Skye, Talisker has been an integral part of island life since 1830. It’s in this land of the extremes that our small distillery stands proudly by the sea, on the shores of Loch Harport, embracing the ever-changing elements that have shaped our island for almost 200 years.
