Crushed rocks, mint and sage give way to freshly sliced Granny Smith apples as the 2022 Chardonnay Koosah Vineyard blossoms in the glass. This mixes vividly ripe, citrus-laced orchard fruits with zesty acidity and hints of sour melon as it flows across the palate with silken textures. Notes of sweet spice linger above a salty concentration as the 2022 finishes with admirable length—lightly structure and remarkably fresh, with a mineral crunchiness. This is a ripe interpretation of Koosah, yet it has the acidity to balance.
The 2022 Chardonnay Koosah Vineyard comes from vines planted in volcanic soils in 2016 at 720 to 1,080 feet of elevation. It was fermented and matured in 65% new, 350- and 500-liter barrels for 12 months and finished with three months in stainless steel. It is delicate and pure on the nose: fragrant pear, white pepper, apricot and allspice are laced with integrated matchstick character that allures rather than repels. The light-bodied palate offers deeply concentrated flavors, though it is still youthfully coiled. It has a taut spine of acidity and a long, perfumed finish. Give it 23 years in bottle or a few hours in a decanter. 225 cases were made.
