Burgundy 2015 En Primeur

05 January 2017 - Viré Clessé, Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon, 2014

A totally different style to the Milly Clos du Four, this is packed with sunny, golden ripe fruity flavours, generous, expressive, buttery ripe stone and citrus fruit with wonderful supporting acidity. So flowing and seamless. Stunning. A new acquisition of Dominique Lafon's, 7ha of vines from the Chateau de Vire. Only a small proportion actually goes into this wine, the rest is declassified into Macon Villages. The vines are old, up to 75 years old, and are a massale selection of the muscat variety of Chardonnay.

05 January 2017 - Bourgogne, Blanc, Terroir d'Exception, Chateau de Meursault, 2014

Exceptionally clear cut on the nose and with great impact on the palate this hails from an plot of 40 years old vines between Albert Grivault's Clos des Perrieres and Perrieres itself. A premier cru site if ever you saw one but for the fact that it was at one time used as a quarry, and the minute soil is moved from a vineyard the parcel becomes declassified and cannot hold cru status. Crisp clean citrus and stone influenced flavours that really do speak of Perrieres - this is a Bourgogne that truly rises above its status.

05 January 2017 - Nuits St Georges, Clos des Porrets, 1er Cru, Henri Gouges, 2012

A textbook example of Nuits, beautifully made. Ripe, rich, structured and mineral, this has everything; ripe fruit flavours of cherry, bramble and loganberry, very fresh with sweeter hints of griotte, wonderful fruit offset by a firm strict edge that only adds to the wine’s freshness and interest; dense but surprisingly smooth. One of the best Clos des Porrets the Domaine have produced. A 3.7 hectare Monopole of Domaine Gouges, always one of the more classic muscular style Nuits of the region.

05 January 2017 - Volnay, Champans, 1er Cru, Marquis d'Angerville, 2011

An open-knit nose, very fragrant, plummy and fruity. Long, juicy and intense flavours of damson, cherry, victoria plum and loganberry, so suave and voluptuous with a red cherry and cherry stone vitality to the finish. Champans is a wonderfully placed vineyard right in the heart of the Volnay appellation that understandably can produce the archetypal example of Volnay; sensual floral and alluring. It is also, very arguably, the vineyard in the d’Angerville stable that has benefitted most from Guillaume d’Angerville’s stewardship since he took over in 2003.

05 January 2017 - Aloxe Corton, Clos du Chapitre, 1er Cru, Follin Arbelet, 2009

Frank’s Clos du Chapitre tends to be a finer, more pliable and expressive style of Aloxe than the classic vineyards such as Fournières and Vercots. Absolutely gorgeous, dense, ripe cherry, sloe and plum fruit, hints of summer berry, set in an engaging, sumptuous tannic structure. A beauty.
