Burgundy 2016 En Primeur

10 January 2018 - Morey St Denis, 1er Cru, Clos Baulet, Hubert Lignier, 2013

Less than a hectare. A small, very well-drained vineyard on sandy and stony soils. This is Morey's smallest premier cru and is replete with wonderful sweet strawberry fruit mixed with racier herbal notes, open and seductive but mouth-wateringly fresh too. This boasts that wonderfully compelling classic Lignier style, pure and unadulterated pleasure.

10 January 2018 - Nuit St Georges 1er Cru Chaignots Robert Chevillon 2009

A Nuits Premier Cru vineyard on the Vosne side of the appellation, this is always one of the more immediately attractive and appealing wines of the Chevillon cellars, brimming with ripe sweet fruit, showing notes of fresh cut flower, cherry blossom, fresh cherries and sloe, fine and seductive as usual with a bit of extra punch and structure than usual.

10 January 2018 - Monthélie, Sur la Velle, 1er Cru, Eric de Suremain, 2001

Fortunately Eric has been able to keep back stock over the years, so to help the terrible shortfall in quantity of the last few years, 2016 being the very worst example yet, he has gradually been releasing library stock to us. This 2001 offer is all that we love about mature Burgundy, notes of forest floor, truffle and smoke combined with jewel-like red cherry fruit. Full of character, easy to enjoy and moreish. Monthelie is a lesser-known appellation producing wines similar to those of its neighbour, Volnay, at a fraction of the price.

10 January 2018 - Maranges, La Fussière, 1er Cru, Bachelet Monnot, 2014

A cuvee that now includes just over 10% whole bunch fermentation, a definite step up in class even from previous vintages this has become finer and more elegant with every passing year. Floral small sweet berry fruit and a taut tannic spine, ethereal yet with gripping persistence and good vitality. A top notch Maranges, one of the most underrated and the radar appellations in the Côte d’Or.

10 January 2018 - Aloxe Corton, Clos du Chapitre, Follin Arbelet, 2013

An atypical Aloxe from the lighter limestone-influenced soils of the splendid Clos du Chapitre. Bright, brilliant and clear-cut flavours of forest berry, strawberry, plum and mineral. Incredibly long flavours, gently gripping and lively. An Aloxe of great beauty. A finer, rounder and fruitier style of Aloxe than the classic vineyards such as Fournieres and Vercots.

10 January 2018 - Bourgogne, Rouge, Bourgogne du Chateau, 2015

Emanating from parcels in the Pommard and Savigny communes, this is Bourgogne of character and energy. Lively and clearly-defined fruit, crisp fresh and crunchy forest berry fruit. All of the class of the vintage with the openness and accessibility of top Bourgogne.
