Burgundy 2017 En Primeur

27 December 2018 - Bourgogne, En Montre Cul, Château de Marsannay, 2015

Ripe, smouldering autumn berry fruit. Suave and velvety hedgerow berries with soft plummy notes. Smooth and with substance. A serious Bourgogne from vines on the slopes north of Marsannay near Dijon. The soils here are gravelly, rather like those of Beaune-Grèves.

27 December 2018 - Rully, Rouge, Cuvée Marey, Domaine de la Folie, 2016

An east facing 45 year-old plot within the Clos de la Belle Croix vineyard. Aged in both steel cuvee and wooden fût, one-fifth of which are new. Gorgeously open and engaging forest fruits, ripe juicy raspberries, strawberries and loganberries with notes of sous-bois. Fully flavoured but supple and delicate. Depth without density. A very accomplished and moreish Rully.

27 December 2018 - Bourgogne, Rouge, Bachelet Monnot, 2015

Bold, full but luminous ripe fruit. Bright, full-flavoured hedgerow and plum fruit with fresh notes of cherry. Round alluring and velvety.
An excellent Bourgogne with a real touch of class. This is is in fact one third declassified Maranges villages, one third declassified Hautes Côte de Beaune and one third Bourgogne from the Puligny commune.

27 December 2018 - Bouzeron, Aligoté, A&P de Villaine, 2016

Citrus rind and ripe golden stone fruits. There is great acidity cutting through this wine together with a savoury, slightly Mediterranean herb and almond note finishing on a tangy, mouth-watering rock salt freshness. From the high quality Aligoté doré variety, which gives naturally lower yields than its cousin found more widely in Burgundy, Aligoté (vert.). With its natural freshness and thick skins this is a variety ideally suited to the warmer vintages we have seen over the last decade. Aged in large, old oak foudres so as not to impart any oak flavour to the wine.

27 December 2018 - Maranges, La Fussière, 1er Cru, Blanc, Bachelet Monnot, 2015

Impressive. Not the fine, elegant shape of a Puligny perhaps but immense character and style nonetheless. Wonderfully mineral and stony together with ripe nectarine, citrus fruit and essential oil flavours. Crisp, and crunchy and with a bit of bite that serves to counteract the ripe stonefruit character. Fermentation and élevage take place in 350 litre barrels, with no battonage, for 18 months. This comes from the higher part of the Fussière vineyard where the poor soil is well suited to producing white wines.

27 December 2018 - Bourgogne, Blanc, Clos du Château, Château de Meursault, 2016

An east facing Clos in the grounds of the Château, this is one of their signature wines. Pure and impeccably balanced, full of bright juicy and generous fruit. Crisp Sicilian lemon and citrus zest notes, touches of blossom, white flower and a hint of stone fruit. Characterful and with sufficient flesh but definitely on the more taut and elegant side of the white Burgundy spectrum. Very moreish. Aged in 25% new oak barrels for months.
