New Release: Sassicaia 2012
Pinch punch first of the month, April 1st signals not only a day of japes and pranks but also the annual tradition of Sassicaia’s new vintage release. This year is the turn of 2012, not a straightforward year, but an impressive wine that will caress rather than punch.
Armed with some fabulous high altitude vineyard slopes inland from the north Tuscan coast in the Bolgheri region, San Guido are making one of the most individual and seductive expressions of Cabernet in the world. We are delighted to release their latest vintage. 2012 was a smaller crop than average thanks to strong winds during fruit set. A cool, wet start to Spring meant that budding started at least 10 days later than usual but the weather soon picked up and, although summer was long and very hot, the evenings were, crucially, cool. September was cooler and rainier and by the end of the month the fruit was ready to pick, ripe and with good levels of acidity. The wine is a little reticent at first but there is certainly great fruit intensity and a fine tannic spine to ensure good ageing potential.
