Coteaux Champenois

Coteaux Champenois AOC is Champagne’s still wine appellation. Covering the same geographical area as that used for the region’s sparkling wines, Coteaux Champenois is predominantly seen as red wine, occasionally a rose (more often than not from Les Riceys) and very rarely a white. Not a lot is made and thus not a lot makes it over to these shores. What does is variable in quality and generally only of interest in the riper vintages. The best, which can be rather mouth-watering, if nervy, come from the southern Montagne de Reims villages of Bouzy, Ambonnay and Ay. Francis Egly’s is probably the regions reference point, coming from very old vine ‘Pinot Fin’ in Ambonnay.
