Kamptal

With approximately 4000 hectares of vineyards, extending along the Kamp River, the Kamptal wine region is one of the most important white wine regions of Austria. The flagship grape varieties are Gruner Veltliner and Riesling. Soils are based predominantly on loess and crystalline gravel, but famous single vineyards such as the Heiligenstein have a more complex geological make-up. Riesling tends to be planted on the most extreme and poorest soils while Gruner makes up the majority of the lower-lying slopes where the soils are more fertile. Kamptal benefits from the dynamic interaction of hot breezes from the Pannonian plain coming from the east with cooler air from the Waldviertel toward the northwest. This unique combination of warm days and cool nights gives rise to the finely delicate aromatics and naturally vibrant acidity characteristic of grapes grown in the region. Stylistically, Kampal wines tend to be fuller bodied, favouring rich fruit and textures with a fine bead of acidity.
