Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Birgit Eichinger, Riesling, Ried Heiligenstein, Erste Lage, 2020

Tighter and cooler fruit coming after the Gaisberg, accompanied by elegant floral notes of violet and lavender, fresh white peach, citrus and cut mango. Very complex, with additional herbal and grassy notes, a taut powerful acidity and salty finish, the Heiligenstein is the jewel in the Riesling crown. One of Austria’s greatest sites, the Heiligenstein is a sandstone, volcanic site producing Rieslings rich in aroma and concentration. Fermented and raised exclusively in stainless steel.

Birgit Eichinger

Weingut Birgit Eichinger was founded in 1992 and now comprises fifteen hectares of prime Kamptal vineyards. The style here is one of full bodied purity, best played out in Eichinger’s exceptionally salty, richly textured Gruner Veltliners that hail from a range of volcanic loess and loam slopes. Winemaking is precise and modern, seeking purity and freshness through almost exclusive use of temperature controlled stainless steel for fermentation and aging. Well-regarded amongst her peers, Birgit is a member of a renowned group of women winemakers in Austria; a close network designed to support one another in this traditionally male-dominated industry, exchange know-how and expertise, and new develop cutting-edge practices in the vineyards and the cellar. Furthermore, the estate is a member of the eminent Österreichische Traditionsweingüter (OTW), the union of Austria’s top wineries.
