Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

An excellent vintage at this St Emilion First Growth, but the main wine is nowhere near ready to approach. I suggest looking instead at the second wine, Le Carillon d'Angélus. Expect stewed spiced plums, raspbery and black cherry fleshy fruits, and a ton of smoked earth, liqourice and slate. Still young at three years old, this will deliver already with a good few hours in a carafe but there is no rush to open. 50% new oak. The first vintage that includes the newly-expanded vineyard footprint, with plots in St Christophe de Bardes and a large area near Cheval Blanc and Figeac.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Independent

The 2018 Carillon d’Angelus is deep garnet-purple in color. It leaps from the glass with scents of baked black cherries, stewed plums, and mulberries, plus hints of fragrant earth, cinnamon stick, and dried roses. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is firm and chewy with a slightly hard/bitter finish.

Neal Martin, Vinous

As explained in my original notes from barrel, the 2018 Carillon d’Angélus is augmented by an additional eight hectares from recent acquisitions: three hectares in Tour St. Christophe and five hectares between Cheval Blanc and Figeac. This has developed on the nose, gaining a little more precision and revealing blackberry, raspberry, orange peel and light rose petal scents, the new oak still beautifully integrated. The palate is very well balanced with grainy tannins, and velvety-smooth. Just a faint graphite element tinctures the black fruit, and there is an almost Left Bank structure to the briny finish. Excellent.

Château Angélus

Château Angélus

Château Angélus, on its renowned south facing "pied de côte" (foot of the hill) site, has been looked after over four generations by the Boüard de Laforest family. The estate’s name derives from a particularly ancient plot of vineyard, from which the men tending the vines were able to hear the angelus ringing out from all three of the village churches, chapelle de Mazerat the church of Saint Martin de Mazerat and the church of Saint Emilion. At the turn of the century Maurice de Boüard de Laforest acquired this three hectare plot, adding it to the adjacent vineyard - Château Mazerat - which had been in the family since 1850. His sons Jacques and Christian expanded the holding by buying adjoining plots of land, until stopping in the 1970s. Today the property is run by Hubert de Boüard de Laforest and his cousin Jean-Bernard Grenié. Angelus, a 1er Grand Cru St Emilion, is now one of the region’s great names, known particular for producing wines with a high Cabernet Franc content.
