Château Ausone

St Emilion

Grape Variety:

Merlot Cabernet

Château Ausone, 1er Grand Cru Classé, St Emilion, 2018

Tasting Note:

Alain and Pauline Vauthier's flagship estate arguably possesses the greatest terroir in Bordeaux. The steep limestone slopes that lead up to the Chateau are planted with 50 year old vines that regularly produce quite exceptional, ethereal, complex, even intellectual wines. Produced from 40% Merlot and 60% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 is a wine of enormous potential. On the day of our tasting it was quite closed, much less expressive than the glorious Chapelle. This is a sleeping giant of a wine. It requires a lot of coaxing, and even after aeration it remains stubborn and reserved. We can see glimpses of the superb fruit and the super fine detail, some of the nuance and complexity and the colossal power. This possesses real authority and brawn with a deep heart of mineral infused fruit. Aromas of garrigue and crème de mûre build with further teasing and then there are the glorious, detailed and cassis lined tannins. This is a large scale wine that will require decades in the cellar to display its full potential. Patience will be required...
