Bérénice Lurton has yet again produced another sensational wine. Not that Climens really needs to prove anything; it is widely regarded as the number one estate in Barsac and often rivals Yquem in Sauternes. As usual, we don't taste a complete wine; we taste numerous barrel samples from different plots and from different tries. There were three main 'tries' and 17 plots. Time constraints prevented us from tasting everything, but we tasted most of them! Notes of candied orange, cinnamon, raisins, peach, apricot, lemon rind, bright orange blossom, spice, tarte tatin, wild honey, caramel, hints of earth, flowers, toffee apples and minerals. The palate is crystal clear, vivid, with surprising density, but lifted, elegant, fine boned, detailed, with a nice saline touch; exquisite!

About Château Climens

This Chateau dates back to the 16th century and is generally regarded as the finest estate in Barsac and one of the great sweet wines produced anywhere in the world. Purchased by Lucien Lurton in 1971, it is now run by Bérénice Lurton. The vineyards are planted exclusively with Semillon on a gravel and sand over limestone and clay soils. Although there is only on grape variety, Bérénice doesn’t hurry the assemblage; when we taste each April, we don’t taste a final blend, rather we taste from individual barrels which are fermented and aged plot by plot and trie by trie.

Appellation: Barsac

It is a region on the other side of the Ciron from the even bigger and more famous Sauternes district. Wines produced within Barsac are also entitled to use the appellation Sauternes.

The wines are considered more elegant than those of Sauternes. Climens and Doisy-Daëne are some of the leading producers

Grape Blend: Semillon | Sauvignon Blanc

Semillon is blended with Sauvignon Blanc to produce the great sweet botrytis-affected wines of Bordeaux in Sauternes and Barsac, the Sauvignon adds aroma, fruit and freshness to the rich fleshy Semillon. Semillon is at its most illustrious in the humid atmosphere of Sauternes and Barsac, where it is susceptible to Botrytis rot, which helps concentrate the fruit sugars, acids and flavours, producing some of the most luscious, sweet long-lived wines in the world. The most renowned example is Château d'Yquem, though there are a plethora of estates throughout the region whose wines come close in quality.
