Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Château Doisy Daëne, 2ème Cru Classé, Barsac, 2022

A standout of the UGC tasting, Doisy Daene pokes its head above the parapet with a raft of complex, high toned aromas; jasmine tea, honey, fresh herbs and pineapple, to name just a few. Not so much a dense, warm sweetie, there is real elegance, refreshment and refinement this 2022 Barsac. Produced from 92% Semillon and 8% Sauvignon Blanc, botrytis arrived late but it was good when it came. Fermentation was carried out in barrique and aging takes place in 30% new oak for 10 months and then it is racked in to tank where it is allowed to harmonise and tighten up before bottling. Long, sweet and well-balanced, a contender for our favourite sweet wine. 138g/l residual sugar and pH 3.89.

Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

Pale gold in colour, with dried apricot, frangipane, honeysuckle and baked mirabelle plum, offset by a welcome bitter edge of rosemary that gives contrast. Rich in texture, this is luscious and intense. Dubourdieu family are the owners at this legendary Barsac estate, and the fact that even here the balance is challenging is a clear sign to me that there is an issue with freshness in the sweet wines this year. Ageing starts with 10 months in oak barrels, this is followed by 9 months in stainless steel tank before bottling. Tasted twice at different temperatures, and the key takeaway is that they need to be served cold to maximise the perception of acidity. I was a huge fan of this wine last year, and I would urge you to look out for the 2021 vintage to really capture the spirit of this excellent property.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Independent

Made from 100% Semillon and with 150 g/L residual sugar, the 2022 Doisy Daene is pale to medium straw in color. The nose is quite closed to start, offering glimpses at notes of baked peaches, lemon meringue pie, and cedar chest, followed by wafts of sea spray, chamomile tea, and powdered ginger. The palate is full-on decadent, featuring rich, sweet layers of flavor and plenty of savory accents, finishing long with just enough freshness.

The 2022 Doisy-Daëne has an intense bouquet that blossoms in the glass: dried honey, quince and honeysuckle, with light saffron scents emerging with time. The palate is brimming with tension, razor-sharp acidity, quince and tangerine, leading to a slightly peachy, vivacious finish. What a wonderful "DD" from Jean-Jacques Dubourdieu.

Château Doisy Daëne

Château Doisy Daëne

Château Doisy-Daëne is Second Cru Classé winery located in Barsac within the Sauternes appellation. The estate has been in the Dubourdieu family since 1924. For over eighty years three generations of vine growers have exercised talents to produce great sweet white wines : Georges (1924-1948), Pierre (1949-1999) and Denis since 2000. The vineyards are planted on soils that consist of red sand and clay with limestone with 80% Semillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc varietals. On average, the vines at Doisy-Daëne are 35 years of age. The wines are typically deep, rich and vibrant and usually sell out en primeur – an unusual feat amongst the estates of Sauternes.
