  Château Langoa Barton

The first time we tasted this was straight after Leoville Las Cases, so the plump and juicy style was a welcome surprise. We re-tasted at the chateau with Lilian, and again, there was a generosity to the fruit, creamy dark fruits, earth, cocoa and gravel. This is a really polished and velvety Langoa full of plum, raspberry and cherry stone flavours. 55% Cabernet, 37% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc.

About Château Langoa Barton

This 3rd growth St Julien estate has been owned by the Barton family for approaching two centuries. It was purchased by Hugh Barton in 1821 and is now managed by Anthony and his daughter, Lilian. Stylistically it is rather less impressive than Leoville Barton, but in recent years it has possessed a bit more punch and longevity. It is a popular Claret in the UK and has a reputation for being well priced.

Appellation: St Julien

St-Julien may not have any first growths like its neighbour Pauillac but has a raft of high-performing Châteaux in its ranks, second through to fourth growths, Including Ducru-Beaucaillou, Léoville Las Cases, Léoville-Poyferré, Léoville-Barton. Gruaud-Larose and Talbot. For many St-Julien is quintessential claret, robust, powerful but refined subtle and poised. Gravelly soils dominate, hence wide plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon with some Merlot.

The hallowed Bordeaux trinity of grape varieties that form the stock left bank blend. Cabernet's Sauvignon's acidic, tannic complex qualities marry ideally with Merlot's sweet, softy flesh characteristics, and Cabernet Franc's finesse and freshness. This classic combination has worked so successfully in Bordeaux that it is now mirrored the world over, particularly in warm sunny climates such as the Languedoc, Tuscany, South Africa, Australia and Napa Valley.
