Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Château L'Eglise Clinet, Pomerol, 2004

1500 cases of this 90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc blend were made. Deep purple, almost black. Very fine smoky/mineral nose with chocolatey edges and very ripe dark fruit within. Plenty of tannin on the entry, a big smoky black fruit character, fine minerality over the top and a very long finish. An impressive structure to this wine, with well-knit, persistent tannins. Excellent.

Neal Martin, Vinous

The 2004 l’Eglise-Clinet is an outstanding wine for the vintage, where notes both from bottles and magnum have been uniformly impressive. It has a fragrant bouquet with copious red cherry, crushed strawberry, orange sorbet and violet aromas that you would think come from a warmer growing season. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine-grain tannin, a fine bead of acidity, resolutely classic in style with a persistent tobacco-laced finish. It is a quintessential l’Eglise-Clinet that can be broached now, but will also age. Tasted at a private dinner in London.

Château L'Eglise Clinet

Château L'Eglise Clinet

The name Denis Durantou will forevermore be linked with Eglise Clinet. From 1983 to 2020 he revitalised this historic estate, elevating it to an elite group of Pomerols. Produced from 4.5 hectares on gravel and clay soils around the church, these wines are amongst the most profound and age worthy in Bordeaux. Denis’ brilliance was most was perhaps most evident in challenging vintages. When his neighbours struggled, he excelled, even in vintages like 2013! Following Denis’ untimely death in 2020, his daughters, Noëmie and Constance have continued the Durantou dynasty. Their first forays have been exceptional, which all bodes well for the future. It is also worth mentioning the excellent second label, La Petite Eglise, produced from a 1.5-hectare vineyard on sandier soils. This is something of an oxymoron – a genuinely good value Pomerol!
