Tasting Note:

Domaines Barons de Rothschild's property in Pomerol has been a little hit and miss over the last decade. They veer towards longer macerations than their neighbours, typically 30 days. The 2017 is definitely a hit. Unusually the blend is 100% Merlot as the old vine Cabernet Franc plots were affected by frost; yields are a paltry 20hl/ha. Initially somewhat subdued, then floral notes emerge, refined strawberry aromas, pure raspberry and sweet crème de cassis, a hint of smoke and Asian spice. On the palate this is lavish yet taut and compact; there is ample dark fruit, crème de mûre interspersed with some wild garrigue notes. This is one of the most coherent and complete Evangiles in recent years. There is a wonderful breadth of fruit, lots of intensity, velvety texture and smart tannins coat the mouth with mineral infused cassis and a fine saltiness. The estate is now 100% organic and on the road to becoming biodynamic.
