Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Independent

A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2020 Alter Ego is deep garnet-purple in color. After a couple of shakes, the nose awakens with notes of plum preserves, baked blackberries, and warm cassis, followed by hints of dark chocolate, lavender, and charcuterie. The elegantly styled, medium-bodied palate is refreshing and fine-grained, featuring soft-spoken black fruit and earthy flavors and a persistent finish.

Neal Martin, Vinous

The 2020 Alter Ego de Palmer has a tightly-wound bouquet that demands a little more coaxing than other Margaux's that I tasted. Quite refined with black cherries, blackcurrant, iris flower and light iodine scents. Lovely definition. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fresh on the entry and quite saline, not as flamboyant as you might expect with a pleasant strictness towards the tannic finish (this is the most tannic Alter Ego ever produced.) Very fine, but serious.

Château Palmer

Château Palmer

The eponymous General Charles Palmer purchased this estate in 1814 having stumbled across the region whilst making his way back home after the Battle of Toulouse. The General moved in high society and marketed his wine successfully in London. The current owners are the Sichel family and the negociant company Mahler-Besse. The vineyards are renowned for their high percentage of Merlot plantings (47%); contrary to the popular theory that one plants one’s best gravel croupes with Cabernet Sauvignon. It is this high percentage of Merlot that gives the wine such a seductive texture and such an exotic character. The estate’s second wine, Alter Ego (previously Reserve de General) is also excellent.
