Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Château Sociando Mallet, Haut Médoc, 2005

True to form, the 2005 Sociando is very dark in colour, almost black, but the freshness on the nose is a sign that this depth of colour is quite natural and unforced. Rich black fruits pervade in a very fine aromatic profile, while on the palate the fruit is brilliantly clear and pure, with an intense attack and lengthy persistence. There is a great balance of flavours, hints of minerality and silky smooth tannins; very impressive.

Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

As we head up to the northern stretches of the Médoc, the colour deepens, and this looks altogether younger than the more southerly Haut-Médocs. Classic, balanced, earthy, still fairly closed and should continue to evolve and improve over the next few years. A ton of eucalyptus, crushed blackberry fruit, very much Cabernet dominant, with a mouthwatering juicy finish. Understated, lean and savoury overall, a little vegetal on the finish but this is old school Bordeaux in a glass from owner and founder Jean Gautreau. Harvest September 19 to October 6

Neal Martin, Vinous

The 2005 Sociando-Mallet is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc picked between September 19 and October 6. It has a very well defined bouquet of red currant, cranberry and wild strawberry fruit; pressed white flowers emerge later, along with a hint of truffle. The medium-bodied palate shows wonderful definition, good cohesion and a touch of spice and black pepper. The tannins are very fine and focused, and the finish fans out wonderfully. I remember being impressed with this out of barrel, and 13 years later it is seriously fulfilling its potential. Tasted at the vertical tasting at Sociando-Mallet.

Château Sociando-Mallet

Château Sociando-Mallet

Sociando Mallet is sometimes described as the Latour of the northern Medoc. The same ridge of gravel that runs through Leoville Las Cases and Latour reappears further up the Gironde estuary just to the north of St Estephe, underneath Sociando. This meticulously run estate has been producing wines of Cru Classé level for many years now, so sadly it is not priced like most Cru Bourgeois... However, if you are looking for serious, mineral Claret with long-term aging potential and Pauillac class (but not the price tag), then look no further.
