"The 2015 Sociando Mallet is a blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc this year. It has a rather introspective bouquet, broody and earthy, although with aeration it reveals pleasant blackberry and wild strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, a little rustic and brutish at the moment with an abrasive finish that will hopefully soften by the time it is in bottle. I feel that this was just upended by the storms that swept across the region in September."

About Château Sociando-Mallet

Sociando Mallet is sometimes described as the Latour of the northern Medoc. The same ridge of gravel that runs through Leoville Las Cases and Latour reappears further up the Gironde estuary just to the north of St Estephe, underneath Sociando. This meticulously run estate has been producing wines of Cru Classé level for many years now, so sadly it is not priced like most Cru Bourgeois... However, if you are looking for serious, mineral Claret with long-term aging potential and Pauillac class (but not the price tag), then look no further.

Appellation: Haut Médoc

The Haut Medoc is a sub region of the Medoc, which covers some 4,643 hectares and incorporates communes such as St Estephe, Pauillac, St Julien and Margaux. Given the size of this appellation, there are a variety of different terroirs including clay, chalk and gravel. Most famous estates within the Haut Medoc defer to their more specific appellations, however, there are five classified growths that belong to the generic Haut Medoc AOC, The most famous being La Lagune and Cantemerle. Jean Gautreau’s Sociando Mallet is another noteworthy Haut Medoc estate.

Grape Blend: Cab. Sauvignon | Merlot | Cab. Franc | Petit Verdot

The full complement of permitted Bordeaux varieties (excluding the rarely used Carmenere & Malbec) and the classic left bank Bordeaux blend. The Cabernets and Merlots usually dominate the blend with small percentages of Petit Verdot blended in for colour, structure and complexity. Several producers outside of Bordeaux have tried to emulate this with a Bordeaux style blend of their own, a particularly successful example being Cain Cellars in the Napa Valley and their splendid Cain Five.
