Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

Violet-edged, with sculpted fruit and an enticing mix of precision and generosity, with classic St Julien balance. Great depth of fruit, crushed rocks, smoked earth, tobacco. Takes time to show itself, but there is sweet blackberry fruit here, and a purity of expression that has clear long-term potential. At this point they were working 15% organic, before switching to 100% the following year. 49% new oak. Harvest September 23 to October 4, Eric Boissenot consultant.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Independent

The 2019 Saint-Pierre is deep garnet-purple in color. It prances out with showy notes of blueberry pie, blackberry preserves, and blackcurrant cordial, plus suggestions of vanilla pod, chocolate box, and cinnamon toast, with a touch of violets. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers amazing freshness and vivacity, with layers of energetic black and blue fruits and a very finely grained texture, finishing long and perfumed.

Neal Martin, Vinous

The 2019 Saint-Pierre has a quintessential Saint-Julien nose, very well defined with blackberry, brown spices and cedar unfurling with each swirl. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, fresh and full of tension. Good mid-weight depth, grippy yet fresh, with an appealing corpulence on the finish. Yummy! Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

Château St Pierre

Château St Pierre

Saint Pierre was one of the most obscure classified growths until very recently, but under the directorship of Henri Martin (owner of Gloria), this small estate his emerged as a somewhat unlikely threat to the established order. In fact, this wine now regularly pops up in conversation alongside the likes of Ducru Beaucaillou, Leoville Las Cases and Leoville Poyferre. The style is classic, but polished with inky colour and profound depth. In 2009 and 2010 this estate reached new levels of excellence, but this has become a property we expect to excel year in year out.
