Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Domaine de Chevalier, Grand Cru Classé Pessac Léognan, 2017

Olivier Bernard's Domaine de Chevalier is always one of the elite wines in Pessac Leognan. The spring frosts were quite uneven here, sparing the large plateau in front of the chateau, but decimating many other plots. Thankfully, the plateau had a successful and early crop with good yields. Rich, but also bright and juicy with notes of fruit pastels, ripe plum, a hint of gravel, stones, cooked meats, smoke and spice. This is rather lovely, it isn't especially challenging, but it is generous, fleshy, and quite persistent, framed with perfectly ripe tannins. Produced from 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot.

Domaine de Chevalier

Domaine de Chevalier

Olivier Bernard's extensive project at Domaine de Chevalier has really come to fruition. After a bold and not to mention expensive re-planting program throughout the `80s and then a decade and a half of patience for the vines to gain maturity, we can really see the benefits. 2005, 2008, 2009 and now 2010 rank amongst the very best wines produced in this sprawling commune. Powerful but graceful, true to their terroir, and just so enjoyable to drink; this has become one of our 'must buy' estates. Olivier's wines offer 'super second' class at relatively affordable prices.
