Brunello New releases: 2009 vintage
A quartet of 2009’s best Brunellos
Despite the Consorzio’s four out of five star rating for the vintage it is clear that 2009 in Brunello is a bit of a minefield. The hot August seemed to throw growers into a bit of a panic and conundrum. Vines shut down, ripening was stop-start, grapes were concentrating under the heat. There was evidently confusion surrounding decisions such as the right picking time and how to handle the wines in the cellar. We tasted over two dozen of the regions top estates and found plenty of variability. However there were some success stories where wines were picked at the right time and handled gently in the cellar. For, although limited to half a dozen estate’s or so, the best of the 2009s have tremendous fruit, richness and roundness they are immediately appealing and, surprisingly, we felt more enjoyable today than the richer, fleshier 2007s.
Here are four of our favourites, exhibited at our Italian tasting on Monday, we feel they will offer immense pleasure now and over the next 5-8 years.
