Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Domaine Jean Grivot, Nuits St Georges, Les Pruliers, 1er Cru, 2018

Dense and muscular. There is a lot of structure here, but the tannins are round. Crunchy red berry and plum with notes of cool earth, dry stone and a rich mocha touch. Les Pruliers, one of the unsung heroes of Nuits St.-Georges situated on the south side of the appellation, yields classic, complete Nuits that combine power, freshness, richness and minerality.

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru was showing just a little reduction on the nose when I tasted the barrel sample, making it difficult to read. The palate is grippy and quite touchy at the moment, offering blackberry and blueberry fruit and a little chewiness toward the finish, which is backward and surly. There is good potential here, but this is more enigmatic than other vintages I have tasted in the past at this same juncture.

Domaine Jean Grivot

Domaine Jean Grivot

Etienne Grivot succeeded his father, Jean, in 1987, and today presides over 15 hectares of vines spread accross Nuits, Vosne, Vougeot and Echézeaux. This is one of the modern-day, benchmark Burgundian domaines. The estate’s densely-planted old vines (the average age is 40 years old) produce naturally-low yields and, together with Etienne’s organic approach to viticulture and sensitive winemaking, result in vivid, pure, very well-balanced Burgundies. The wines are much more softly extracted than when Etienne first started, the winemaking is incredibly flexible, depending on the vintage, but usually only 5% of stalks are retained, and rarely more than a third of the barrels are new. Daughter Mathilde and son Hubert have committed to working at the Domaine and have taken on more responsibility from Etienne since 2017, so the estate's future seems secure. A reference point Burgundy Domaine.
