The 2016 Chablis Montmains 1er Cru is more backward than the Côte de Léchet on the nose, but there is still a captivating stoniness here, what you might call a “mean” bouquet but in a positive sense. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, just a little more weight than the Côte de Léchet with a touch of sage and white pepper on the finish, though overall I just prefer the charm displayed by the Léchet.

Laurent Tribut

Laurent Tribut

The Tributs are a quiet and unassuming couple who live in the village of Poinchy where they make minute quantities of exquisite Chablis. This is a veritable small family business that sees Laurent working in his 5 hectares of vines and making the wine (with his young daughter who is studying viticulture in Beaune soon to join him) while his wife, Marie-Clotilde, looks after business matters. Like his brother-in-law, Vincent Dauvissat, Laurent believes in ageing his wines in oak barrels (7 to 8 years old) after fermentation in steel cuvees. The provenance of the oak is mixed (Allier, Vosges, Chatillons) which adds complexity to his mineral yet unctous wines. These are authentic, artisan Chablis that demand time, even the Chablis Village can take a couple of years to be at its best.
