Harlan Estate

Napa Valley

Grape Type:

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon, 2016

Tasting Note:

One only need spend a few seconds with a glass of Harlan Estate 2016 for it to be clear that this is a wine of soaring complexity and multifaceted detail. From the off, a cascade of aromatics charges from the glass; wild minerality, tiny dark blueberries, graphite, forest floor and mountain herbs then the cut of volcanic stoniness that conjures notes of iron, Indian spice and dried flowers. Every repeat visit gives a little more nuance, another layer of fruit, flower or forest. As it hits the palate, an immense wave of sumptuous tannins provides the framework for the very precise fruit, deep reserves of powerful, velvety berry fruit, mocha, pipe tobacco and sage that roll across the palate born aloft by a bright and fresh acidity. The beauty of the tannic grain allows the huge depth of flavour to simply glide across the palate, finishing with a long core of creamy, complex minerality. A total tour de force, destined for four or five decades of ageing.
