Tasting Note:

Idiosyncratic Heitz, recently purchased by billionaire Gaylon Lawrence, produce a style of wine that hasn’t changed much in the past five decades. Their Cabernet’s spend a year in huge oak barrels before going to barrique for around 3 years and tend not to do malo-lactic fermentation. It’s an unusual process that produces extremely long lived wines that have great acidity and wild red fruits alongside signature mint and sage leaf flavours – Californian, but from another era. The 2014 estate Cabernet was born out of the earthquake vintage, a year that saw a gentle summer, very little rain, but not much in the way of excessive heat either. The resulting Cabernets are a little fresher than the 2013s, with less imposing structures.
