Tasting Note:

The 2016 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is all Heitz on the nose, but perhaps with a little more precision than in past vintages. Red cherry fruit, plenty of floral notes then menthol, sage and scorched earth notes parade from the glass. The palate has high acidity, this is a taut, intense red fruited Cabernet that feels like a wine from another era - it is almost hard to pin down as Cabernet with the salty, pine needle, red currant fruit profile, then that cool old oak and menthol note. Experience tells us that these Napa Cabs, produced in that idiosyncratic Heitz way - 9 months in large neutral oak followed by two years in half new half used barrels before a final year in bottle – flourish a couple of years after release and go on to improve for many years if cellared correctly. As old school as ever, but with added detail. 2016 was an excellent Napa Vintage that has produced wines of freshness and precision.
