Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Ridge Vineyards, Monte Bello, 2013

The Monte Bello is the result of a barrel selection of the estates Chardonnay, which is then aged in barrels for a futher year. Polished sweet mineral notes combine with lemon pith and fine stone fruits, there's great definition on display, more richness than the regular bottling, but also more tension and persistence. This is a fabulous vintage for Monte Bello Chardonnay.

Neal Martin, Vinous

The 2013 Chardonnay Monte Bello is drinking beautifully. Wax resin, yellow plum, pressed dandelion and light peaty aromas waft from the glass all with wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine bead of acidity, hints of green olive complementing the citrus fruit with wild peaches towards the finish. Irresistible now, but you know it is going to continue maturing with style. Tasted at the "Judgement of Clapham Junction" dinner in London.

Ridge Vineyards

Ridge Vineyards

The history of Ridge begins in 1885, when Osea Perrone, a doctor, bought 180 acres near the top of Monte Bello Ridge, producing the first vintage under Ridge Vineyard’s name in 1892. Ridge relies on nature and tradition rather than technology. The viticulture is sustainable, almost entirely organic and avoid additions in the wine-making as much as possible. There is no mechanical processing except for gentle filtration at bottling and traditional desteming and pressing. Their approach is straightforward: find intense, flavourful grapes; intrude upon the process only when necessary; draw the fruit's distinctive character and richness into the wine.
