Dominus 2012 - "flirting with perfection."
2012 is a stellar Napa year and forms the first in a brace of vintages that look set to go down in the history books as two of Napa’s greatest. Unsurprisingly, Christian Moueix and his team appear to have exploited these perfect conditions to maximum effect, as both Dominus and Napanook 2012 look set to be reference point examples. Plentiful early season rainfall replenished underground water reserves, summer temperatures were warm and steady, without excessive heat spikes, and harvesting was carried out over two weeks from October 9th to the 21st.
According to Robert Parker, Dominus 2012, the selection for which becomes more stringent year by year (thereby pushing the quality of Napanook ever higher), reminds him of both the 1991 and 1994 vintages – both legendary Napa valley years. Certainly our tasting of it showed a wine of considerable power and intensity but also all the elegance and nuanced complexity that Dominus so personifies.
