Alain Vauthier and consultant oenologist Michel Rolland work the finest terroir in St Emilion, arguably the best terroir in Bordeaux. These perfect south facing slopes on deep clay and limestone with asterias have produced extraordinary even epic wines since 1996. There will be some 18,000 bottles of this sensational 2011 produced with yields of just 29hl/ha. Cabernet Franc dominates the blend with 45% Merlot. As with the Chapelle, the wine is fermented and macerated in thermoregulated wooden vats before being aged in new oak barrels for roughly 20 months. Fragrant, complex, with deep dark brooding core mingled with high toned notes of cut flowers, spices, crème de mûre, herbs undergrowth and a just a hint of reduction. There is impressive sweetness to the attack with lots of minute berries and stoney minerality. Intense, seductive, even intellectual; this is a wine with tremendous length, velvety texture and fine Musigny-like tannins.
