Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Château Grand Village, Blanc, 2019

The Guinaudeau’s white wines have received much praise in recent years. Their tireless pursuit of excellence and innovative approach towards clones and vinifications has resulted in some really special, atypical white Bordeaux. 2019 Grand Village Blanc is a blend of 74% Sauvignon Blanc (predominantly Sancerre clones with some older Bordeaux clones) and 26% Semillon, harvested from a two hectare plot with a little more clay in the soil than that used for red production. This has been vinified entirely in stainless steel and bottled in the first spring after harvest. The 2019 is hard to place, with many critics and tasters looking towards the Cote d’Or for references. It is extremely precise with fragrant notes of gooseberries, citrus fruits, flowers and stones. The palate has laser like precision – crystalline fruits lead towards the bright, saline, racy finish. This is fast becoming one of the most interesting white wines on our list.

Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

Lift and freshness from the first hit, with juicy white peach, citrus and oyster shell. The nose is richly textured, a little subdued at first but showing precision and clarity. 12,000 bottles in this vintage, with fermentation in barrel, then 20% new oak. Around half of the planted Sauvignon Blanc is from Sancerre genetics. From the same family as Château Lafleur in Pomerol.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Independent

The 2019 Grand Village Blanc skips out of the glass with vivacious scents of fresh pears, white peaches, and lemon grass with a hint of chalk dust. Medium-bodied, it is elegant and refreshing, with great intensity and compelling chalk-laced tension on the finish. The blend is 74% Sauvignon Blanc and 26% Semillon.

The 2019 Grand Village Blanc, two-thirds Sauvignon Blanc and one-third Sémillon, has a detailed bouquet featuring touches of nectarine, orchard fruit and orange pith; light white flower scents emerge with time. The smooth palate is well balanced with a lightly spiced entry, a slightly waxy texture, and hints of apricot and quince toward the fresh finish. Lots of lovely dry extract lends substance to this excellent white.

Château Grand Village

Château Grand Village

Jacques and Sylvie Guinaudeau’s home estate is situated in the commune of Mouillac in the canton of Fronsac. Over a third of Grand Village is planted with vines in the best and most suitable plots for viticulture. The rest of the estate is woodland or is used to rear cattle or produce cereal crops. It is an enchanting estate and one that despite its lowly appellation is capable of producing excellent wines. The estate also houses the family’s massale selection nurseries. The healthy virgin soils in a rich bio-diversity provide the favourable conditions to nurture old Bouchet cuttings from Chateau Lafleur.

The same 15 strong team who tend the vines at Chateau Lafleur is responsible for the viticulture and wine-making here. With all the resources and savoir-faire of one of Pomerol’s elite estates at their disposal, it is no surprise that the wines produced at Grand Village are spectacular. From the 2013 vintage, a new cuvee produced exclusively from Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc clones has been bottled. ‘Les Champs Libres’ is a miniscule production that demonstrates the outstanding quality of the terroir and the talent and ambition of the Grand Village team. It is fermented and aged entirely in new Taransaud barrels and marries the intensity and laser like focus of great Sauvignon Blanc to the gunflint and silken texture of something altogether more Burgundian.
