    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Veronique must have been doing some DIY in the chateau, there was a distinct aroma of MDF in the Haut Bailly 2017. Apart from the aisles of B&Q, this also conjured up notes of cherry liqueur and gravel. Although difficult to assess on the nose, the palate displays clearly the class of this terroir. This is so pure and lavish at the same time as being tight knit and reserved. The fruit is refined and engaging; sweet cassis and cranberry tantalize the taste buds before the exceptional tannins gently caress with detailed black and red fruits and hints of stones. Classy and refreshing, with wonderful tension and energy. Superb!

Subtle, welcoming, layered, balanced, this is just so Haut Bailly in its cocoa bean, cassis, smoked capsicum, saffron, cigar and slate feel, with mouthwatering oyster shell signoff. Ready for sharing, but will age for decades. Harvest September 13 to 29. The last vintage under Bob Wilmers, Axel Marchal and Valerie Lavigne take over as consultants, 60% new oak.

The 2017 Haut-Bailly matured in 50% new oak and bottled at the end of April. It has a fragrant bouquet with blackcurrant, wild strawberry, wilted rose petal and light truffle scents emerging with time. This is a less powerful nose than recent vintages, but I appreciate the understated style. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded, saturated tannin. There is good acidity here, quite spicy in the mouth with a gentle, if not overly complex finish. It is the kind of Haut-Bailly that will drink comparatively early, though it has the substance to last for 20+ years.
