    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot. The Cazes family has made considerable progress with Haut Batailley and we're beginning to see its new identity. Suggestions of black raspberries and fragrant cassis. Energetic, with a certain crunch and intensity, the palate has a bright core of bittersweet dark fruit framed by ripe, brisk tannins. There’s a sumptuous touch to the fruit, good poise, and a refreshing sapidity.

Some angularity to the tannins, this goes longer on extraction than the 2020 Verso, as you would expect, but it comes up against the vintage character. Earth, raspberry leaf and smoked earth, plenty of savoury Cabernet, crayon and pencil lead, savoury and fragrant. 70% new oak. 40ha of vines from this vintage, after extra planting of the vineyard. Cool climate character. 70% new oak for ageing. Julien Galland technical director, 35hl/h yield.

Bottled at the end of May, the 2021 Haut-Batailley has a well-defined bouquet with briny, seaweed-infused black fruit, certainly demonstrating more concentration and cohesion compared to the Verso at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. Fresh and focused, touches of cassis infuse the black fruit with impressive grip, classic in style with a sapid, black olive-tinged finish. Very fine.

A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, the 2021 Haut-Batailley is deep garnet-purple in color. It springs from the glass with blackcurrant jelly, plum preserves, and cedar notes plus wafts of underbrush and black pepper. Light to medium-bodied, the palate delivers chewy tannins with a lively backbone to support the pepper-laced black fruits, finishing long and savory.
