    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

The second wine of Haut Brion is extremely good, but comparing tasting notes it seemed that some of us had completely different experiences. Some thought the Merlot character really dominated and this was glossier, more decadent and more about soft fruit than the Chapelle. Others thought this was intensely mineral and classical, even more so than the Cabernet dominated Chapelle. Whoever you asked there was a consistent theme; the quality is excellent for a second wine. The tannins are fine and grippy, there is good length and there are noble flavours of stones and lush black fruit. 80% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 16% Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2014 Clarence Haut-Brion has a tad more opulence on the nose than its peers: brambly red fruit, white pepper, tobacco and just a touch of antique wood varnish. Fairly complex - this keeps the nose in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, predominantly red fruit laced with peppercorns and bay leaf, gaining weight toward the finish. It's persistent on the finish, better than expected and worth hunting down. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

Medium to deep garnet-brick in color, the 2014 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion delivers notes of sauteed herbs and black peppercorns opening out to a core of plum preserves and mossy tree bark with a waft of graphite. The medium-bodied palate has bags of energy and freshness, with a soft, well-played texture and lifted finish.
