Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Domaine de Montille, Vosne Romanée, Aux Malconsorts Christianne, 1er Cru, 2018

They share the same vineyard name but that is where the comparison with the regular Malconsorts ends. Less muscle more nuance and poise. Fresh and juicy, a finely balanced mix of svelte dark berry and bright red cherry fruit, mingled with sweeter notes of dried violet and star anise. Distinctly floral and lifted, noble and sophisticated with enough sinew and chew holding it all together. From a very special part of the Malconsort vineyard, a parcel that is the other side of the road to the main Malconsorts block, surrounded by the original part of La Tâche. Aged in a little more new oak than the classic Malconsorts and fermented with 100% whole bunches.

Neal Martin, Vinous

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts Cuvée Christiane 1er Cru contains two-thirds whole cluster but a little more new oak than the regular cuvée (as a reminder, it comes from the parcel that lies adjacent to La Tâche). It has a little more definition and darker fruit on the nose, developing more floral scents with aeration. This is very impressive. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, focused and harmonious, with gentle grip toward the chalky-textured finish. It will require several years in bottle.

Domaine de Montille

Domaine de Montille

Etienne is one of Burgundy's great purists, his long-lived wines may need time but they are some of the most honest and terroir-driven wines in Burgundy. The wines are fermented using all or partial whole bunch vinification depending on the vintage, élévage is long and slow in their cold cellars and percentages of new oak are low, rarely more than 50% even for Malconsorts. From some of the most vivid, intense Beaune's there are to perfumed, stylish Volnays and silky Vosnes Romanee, Etienne makes a borad range of some of Burgundy's most polished wines. The Domaine's policy on white wines is to pick as early as possible, as soon as the fruit has just approached ripeness, resulting in tense, fine wines with alcohols rarely more than 13%
