Génot Boulanger, Puligny Montrachet, Les Garennes, 1er Cru, 2018

A typically slight and rocky Garenne but with no lack of ripeness. Long, focused flavours of crushed stones and yellow plums. There is a dancing, airy quality to this, it moves lightly across your palate. Fine-tuned and with a bit of crunch to it. Spritely Puligny. A south-east facing vineyard, high up the hill just below the forest, planted on white, rocky limestone soils with fossils in the subsoil. A cool and mineral terroir. Aged in 20% new oak for 12 months followed by six months in tank.

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet La Garenne 1er Cru is neatly focused, quite taut on the nose, scents of wet limestone, petrichor and Golden Delicious. This vineyard suffers much less in dry conditions and maybe that lends this a sense of vitality. The palate is well balanced with a smooth texture, fine acidity and satisfying tension and "bite" towards the finish, just a very slight hint of cucumber on the finish. Superb.
