Emrich Schönleber, Monzinger Fruhlingsplatzchen, Riesling, Spätlese, 2017

A delicate yet tense sweetness, white pear, yellow fruit and a citrus zest intensity on finish. A superb Spatlese with real zip to it this year.

Fantastically floral as well as fruity on the nose and palate, this features honeysuckle, lily-of-the-valley, ripe pear and strawberry. While seductively creamy in feel, it’s also infectiously juicy as well as open and airy, with a billowing sense of inner-mouth perfume. The superbly-sustained finish delivers a welcome influx of tangy, juicy lime and grapefruit that helps balance high residual sugar, along with saliva-inducing salinity. The upshot is dazzlingly and mouthwateringly multi-layered, delivering dynamic complexity, but also genuine refreshment, not to mention compulsion to take the next sip.

A great Nahe estate that was started by Werner Schönleber in the 1960s with just two hectares. Today the estate comprises 14 hectares, mainly Riesling, on the slate and quartzite soils of the Halenberg and Frühlingsplatzchen vineyards. Intense vineyard work and spontaneous fermentation in old oak casks together with ageing in steel vat conspire to produce intense, long lived Nahe Riesling that combines floral, charming qualitites with intense minerality. For the last five years, this estate has been perfoming to is maximum, rivalling Germany’s very greatest producers.
