Tasting Notes

Maturity:
Keep/Drink

ABV:
9.5 %

Notes

A sudden burst of fruit heralds the arrival of the Kabinett, tangerine, wild strawberry and salted honey. Such a generous mouthful, ripe apples, pineapple and peach - the acidity content to play second fiddle to all this engaging fruit. A Kabinett that simply demands to be drunk.

Notes
White peach and black currant, wreathed in honeysuckle, migrate from the nose to a delicate, almost airy, yet lusciously succulent midpalate. Subtle creaminess is consistent with striking transparency to stony and floral nuances in a soothingly yet stimulatingly lingering liftoff of a finish. What a vintage this is for those Rhine growers who still have the talent and interest to accomplish something special in the category of Kabinett! (The wine originated in the Frühlingsplätzchen, incidentally, but in keeping with the VDP’s attitude toward Kabinett, reference to its vineyard of origin has been removed, presumably lest it get terroir aspirations above its station.)

Emrich Schönleber

Emrich Schönleber

A great Nahe estate that was started by Werner Schönleber in the 1960s with just two hectares. Today the estate comprises 14 hectares, mainly Riesling, on the slate and quartzite soils of the Halenberg and Frühlingsplatzchen vineyards. Intense vineyard work and spontaneous fermentation in old oak casks together with ageing in steel vat conspire to produce intense, long lived Nahe Riesling that combines floral, charming qualitites with intense minerality. For the last five years, this estate has been perfoming to is maximum, rivalling Germany’s very greatest producers.
