The Beautiful 2011s of Giuseppe Mascarello
The Mascarello's describe their 2011 Barolos as “perfumed, pretty and floral.” This is fairly typical of the 2011 vintage, a year that looks set to be a very good one indeed for all Nebbiolo-based wines.
The season started early, thanks to high temperatures in April, and after a rainy start to the summer, August was very hot. Crucially rain arrived in early September, nights became cool and this allowed for the vital prolonged and even ripening that Nebbiolo needs. In Giuseppe Mascarello’s view this is a very open and charming vintage along the lines of 2007. Whilst mid-summer temperatures were high, this is far from your typical hot vintage. September’s cool nights extended the season and has allowed for nuance and complexity in the wines.
These are thoroughly attractive wines that offer a charm that belies an underlying depth and intensity.
