Tasting Note:

A wine that often confounds any preconceptions about a vintage. And so it is with the 2009. Whilst there is a generosity and richness that points you towards a warmer vintage, this simply could not be fresher or better balanced. Beautiful, layered intense but demure. Classy, precise red berry fruit caress the palate. Floral sumptuous and luxurious but measured. As lush and sweet as the fruit is, the definition and freshness are nonetheless impeccable. An amazing 120 year old vineyard only made as a Riserva in the most special of vintages, the rest of the time it forms part of their Barolo blend. The wine comes from the top of the Voghera hill in Serralunga. The soils are a mix of clay limestone and marl (marl is a white, dry and poor compact clay difficult for vines to penetrate.) Only 3000 bottles are made a year from their 0.9ha. Aged for 5 years in a single 37hl used oak cask, followed by 5 years in bottle.
