A fabulous a little known plot that is a continuation of the famous Rocche vineyard of Castiglione sitting above and next to Roagna’s Pira. The poor soils and east facing exposure make for a wine that favours elegance over power. Startlingly vivid, beautifully crystalline, red alpine berry fruit, gently scented, silky but with nerve and grip too, haunting, pure and stylish. Gorgeous.

About Luigi Oddero

An estate going places fast, we believe Luigi Oddero e Figli has the potential to be one of the very great estates of the Langhe. Its story started in 2006 when Luigi split off from the Oddero estate with 30ha. Luigi sadly passed away in 2009 but his wife Lena is now running the azienda alongside children Maria and Giovanni. Dante Scaglione, of Giacosa fame, is consultant winemaker and in 2016 Francesco Versio joined the team as full time head winemaker. Also formerly of Bruno Giacosa Francesco is considered one of the brightest young winemaking talents of the region. Methods are traditional here, long gentle extractions followed by ageing in large old oak casks for up to three years. Blessed with some truly great vineyards and some of the best winemaking talent around, the Luigi Oddero future looks bright indeed. Vivid, elegant wines with great intensity and purity of flavour.

Appellation: Barolo

Barolo is the greatest, most intense and expressive display of the Northern Italian grape variety Nebbiolo. The name is given to bottles from the Piedmont area, made exclusively from Nebbiolo, and coming from the five core towns of Barolo, La Morra, Serralunga d'Alba, Castiglione Falletto and Monforte d'Alba, along with certain other peripherary villages. The wines offer power, aromatics and longevity that is almost unmatched elsewhere in Italy, perhaps the world. Top, forward thinking producers have pushed huge changes in the winemaking culture of the area, and as a result finer, purer Barolo is being produced than ever before.

Grape Type: Nebbiolo

Arguably Italy's greatest red grape variety, responsible in North-West Italy’s Piedmont region for the great reds of Barolo, Barbaresco and Roero. At its best it produces wines of an aromatic complexity and subtlety similar to that of great Burgundy, a region from where many pioneering producers such as Elio Altare drew their inspiration. The aromas and flavours are very different in profile to Pinot Noir however, usually characterised by roses, tar and truffle. Naturally tannic and acidic, Nebbiolo wines are excellent for long term ageing.
