Barbaresco, Asili, 2012


The most tightly-coiled and edgy of the estate's Barbarescos. There is a sense of really small, concentrated berry fruit here. Fresh and with an austere edge, supporting the vital red berry and cherry fruit, notes of small garriguettes strawberries and wineberries. So intense and focused. At fifty years old these are the estate’s oldest vines. The vineyard is south facing and cauldron-like, benefiting from great warmth during the day but, being more influenced by the river, experiencing cooler nights. The soils are siltier and sandier than Rabaja giving the wine a fabulous perfume. Produced the traditional way with a 20 day fermentation and maceration followed by 30 months ageing in large Slavonian oak casks.

About Luisin

Founded in 1913 by Luigi Minuto, great-grand-father of current owner Roberto Minuto, Cascina Luisin has always been owned and managed by the same family. Their seven hectares are spread over prime Barbaresco real estate – mostly comprising two of the region’s great crus, Asili and Rabaja. A truly artisan operation, the quality of the Luisin wines are centred on the vineyard work which is attentive and manual, whilst wine-making is simple and un-intrusive; 28 day fermentations and macerations are followed by 30 months in large Slavonian oak casks. The hallmark of these classic, thrilling Barbarescos are purity and vitality, offering tension, pretty but subtle aromas, vineyard expression and finesse. Minuto is the unsung hero of the Barbaresco DOCG.

Appellation: Piedmont

Piedmont sitting at the foot of the mountains is justly regarded as one of, if not the finest wine growing region in Italy. The noblest grape found in the region in undoubtedly Nebbiolo, with the DOCG's of Barolo and Barbaresco at the forefront of production. Barbera and Dolcetto come in second and third, and being earlier ripening are often found located on those sides of the hills that receive less sunshine. The wines from Piedmont are intrinsically food friendly wines, a fact understandable given the culinary strength of the area.
