This wine’s class is immediately obvious in its texture, which is suave and caressing but, like all great wines, the palate starts off by being a little brooding and mysterious. With air the flavours gently unfurl, notes of wild berries, undergrowth, mocha herb, sweet spice, gravel and smoke. Seamless, flowing yet deep and hauntingly long, a wine of beauty and personality. Merlot grown on clay with a Mediterranean lilt, a great and individual expression of this variety. A selection from a single hillside plot of 7ha in Bolgheri grown on grey clay soils that are unique to the area, its first vintage was 1986.

About Masseto

The special grey clay soils that form the core of the Masseto Hill in Tuscany’s Bolgheri are unique in the region. So when all around them were planting Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, the Masseto team planted this steep slope with Merlot. Great sun exposure for the leaves and water retentive soils for the roots, the land was tailor-made for this Bordeaux variety. The project came to fruition in 1986 when the first Masseto wine was produced. The result of deep knowledge of the land, attentive hand-management of the vineyards, an elevation of 120 metres above sea-level and complex clay soils, Masseto is an outstanding and individual expression of Merlot. Clay influenced with a Mediterranean lilt, this is a of wine gravitas, mystery and sensuality.

Appellation: Bolgheri

One of the many Tuscan sub-regions to be causing quite a stir in it's own right, Bolgheri is perhaps the most widely lauded area for Italian wine production outside of Barolo. Home to top quality names like Sassicaia, Ornellaia and Masseto this little village has built a reputation all it's own.

Grape Type: Merlot

The supple, alluring plummy characteristics of Merlot have made it hugely popular the world over. It is often blended with the more structured Cabernet Sauvignon, though on its own there are some very serious, long-lived examples in Pomerol and Saint Emilion, where it is planted on both cool clay and hotter gravely soils. It is grown more extensively throughout France and the rest of the world to produce soft, approachable, uncomplicated wines, namely in the Languedoc, Chile, California, Italy and Australia.
