Matteo Correggia, Nebbiolo d'Alba, Val dei Preti

2009

Tasting Notes

ABV:
14 %

Notes

One of the best Val dei Pretis for years, very good, intense, rich, ripe flavours of berries, dark cherries and dark chocolate, powerful, smooth and dense with bright shimmers of salt and mineral on the finish. Very serious Nebbiolo. Val dei Preti is a single vineyard near Canale just outside of the Roero DOCG that benefits from similarly light, sandy soils. After a light extraction the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and ageing in barriques, 50% of them new, and is bottled after 18 months.

Notes
The 2009 Nebbiolo d'Alba La Val dei Preti is a big, expansive wine loaded with sweet red cherries, crushed flowers and spices. There is plenty of texture and depth in the glass, but the wine turns a bit diffuse on the mid-palate as it loses an element of focus and sheer energy leading to the finish.

Matteo Correggia

Matteo Correggia

Matteo Corregiga learned everything about the vine from his father and, having never gone to any kind of oenology college, was taught his winemaking skills by Elio Altare and other local friends. Matteo started bottling his own wine with great success when his father died in 1985 making them the very best Piedmont has to offer. The indigenous white Arneis and black Brachetto vines are carefully nurtured to produce beautifully individual wines. The Roeros are made from Nebbiolo but are evidently more refi ned than Barolo due to the lighter soils in the region – they are exquisitely pure and truly outstanding. 2000 was Matteo’s last vintage after his tragic vineyard accident. His wife Ornella and her children, with the help of talented young wine maker Luca Rostagno, now run the estate.
