Last Thursday, a few lucky guests were treated to a tasting and lunch with the charming Olivier Krug. Olivier is the six generation of his family to run the House of Krug. Since Johann-Joseph Krug founded the brand in 1843, the house has gained a reputation for making uncompromising, complex wines, which grace the tables of the great and the good. This is a House that epitomizes the term, ‘Prestige Cuvee’. For further details about the wines tasted last week, please click here.
We are delighted to offer a selection of formats of the Krug Grande Cuvée. We were staggered by the quality of this blend, and wholeheartedly endorse this wonderful Champagne. As is often the way, the Champenoise are rather more erudite and adroit at describing their wine than we are... ‘Krug Grande Cuvée is the archetype of Krug’s philosophy of craftsmanship and savoir faire: A blend of around 120 wines from ten or more different vintages, some of which may reach 15 years of age. Blending so many vintages gives Krug Grande Cuvée its unique fullness of flavours and aromas, its incredible generosity and its absolute elegance - something impossible to express with the wines of just a single year. Its exceptional finesse is the result of a stay of at least another six years in the cellars. Over twenty years are needed to craft each bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée: the first prestige cuvee re-created each year, beyond the very notion of vintage’. – www.krug.com
The latest exciting development at Krug is that its Grande Cuvée blend now has an ID code on each bottle. They are something of a pioneer in this respect. The first number in the code will tell you what quarter that bottle was disgorged in, the next two digits the year. Additionally the code can be plugged into Krug's website, whereupon more information about that specific bottle is revealed, including the oldest and youngest vintages in that particular blend. This should prove of great interest to the collector, who will be able to compare Grande Cuvée bottles of different ages as they mature.
