La Nieta and Amancio - "world class wines"
La Nieta, from Vinedos de Paganos, is the Eguren’s flagship wine in Rioja Alavesa. The product of a single vineyard, harvested below 20hl/ha, totally destemmed by hand and aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels – it is given the same kid gloves treatment that their other flagship wine Amancio receives.
Longtime favourites of J&B, the Eguren estate has now found great favour with Luis Gutiérrez, writing in the latest edition of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (#210). In his first report on Rioja Luis talks with passion about the current merging of tradition and modernity, and how “Wise producers are taking the best from both worlds and the wines are getting back to just being Rioja (again)”.
La Nieta, and indeed Amancio, are two of his favourite wines of the release, symbolising this convergence of styles, and scoring 2nd and 3rd highest with 97 – 96+.
