About Domaine Charles Joguet

2006 is the first full vintage at this Domaine under the total control of young up and coming winemaker François-Xavier Barc following the retirement of Alain Delauney. What a glorious debut, 2006 was a below average production of 32 hl hectare as a result of a severe green harvesting and triage, the wines are simply stunning. The complexity and harmony of their single vineyard Clos, planted on tuf limestone, are unsurpassed in the appellation. Each of the Clos spend up to a year in two to five-year-old barriques, with a higher proportion of newer wood for the more concentrated Clos de La Dioterie and Clos du Chéne Vert. A domaine to watch very closely.

Appellation: Chinon

Chinon sits in the Touraine district of the Loire and is primarily a region known for the production of medium bodied reds made from Cabernet Franc. A small amount of Rose is also produced, along with very small quantites of white from Chenin Blanc. The best reds, such as those of Charles Joguet, have the ability to age in bottle, and are a delightful combination of an intensity of fruit, finesse and refreshing acidity.

Grape Type: Cabernet Franc

Ripening earlier than Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc acts both as great blender with its special herb infused red berry fragrance, and at the same time as a form of insurance policy. On the cooler, clay soils of the Right Bank it adds backbone to many of the Merlot-dominated St Emilions and Pomerols. There are a small number of outstanding Cabernet Franc-based blends on the right bank, the most sought after being Cheval Blanc, Ausone, Le Dôme, Angelus and Vieux Château Certan. Outside of Bordeaux it's the major red grape of the Loire valley, where huge strides in quality have been made over the last decade by producers such as Yannick Amirault, Domaine de la Butte, Charles Joguet and Château de Hureau. Here it is mainly produced as a 100% single varietal wine, highly expressive, pungently scented, vital and silky.
