Central Otago

Grape Variety:

Pinot Noir

Calvert, Pinot Noir, Central Otago, 2017

Tasting Note:

Compact and earthier than either Cornish Point or Block 3. Solid and dense but wonderfully velvety. The tight-knit, well-defined tannins offer excellent grip to the bramble, bullace and dark cherry fruit. This needs time in bottle for its character and complexity to unwind but the fruit is easy to admire, being so crisp and crystal clear. More Nuits than Vosne is how owner Nigel Greening describes Calvert. Different to Cornish point in that there is more clay in the subsoil here, yielding more dense and powerful wines. Fermented with 25% whole bunches and aged for 17 months in a quarter new burgundy barrels.
