Atalayas de Golban

Atalayas de Golbán, established in 2004, in Atauta, is an innovative winery from the Ribera del Duero. Its name pays homage to the watchtower that stood over the Atauta valley, through which flowed the Golbán stream. Emma and Miguel Angel Sánchez, daughter and son of the prestigious wine merchant, Miguel Sánchez, produce a modern, characterful wine that gives great pleasure even in its youth. The Tinto Fino grapes come from twenty hectares of vineyards in the Atauta valley 950 metres above sea level, as well as some 60-70 year old vines from other communes near Soria. The vines grow on poor, sandy, pebbly soils which overlay a base of chalk and limestone. The climate is austere and continental, being intensely cold in winter, the summers being short but hot. The modern winery, located in Atauta, Soria, is fully equipped with the latest wine-making technology. After a rigorous inspection, the grapes are carried to the winery by hand in 25-kilogram crates. The fermentation is carried out in large steel tanks and then ageing takes place for 12 months in 1-2 year old French oak casks (brought from Château Haut-Brion.) and 20% new casks. The wine will then rest for three months before bottling without any kind of filtration or clarification. Excellent, juicy, characterful wines that represents some of the best value in Ribera.
