Tasting Note:

The “Grandes Places” is produced from a parcel of 65-year-old vines in the Les Grandes Places vineyard above Verenay. The vineyard is mostly planted with old “Serines” (traditional Ampuis Syrah). Traditionally the resultant wine is powerful and has a firm structure. The 2009 is as serious as can be, a classic, strongly structured and profound wine, sterner and more brooding than the Viaillère, very complex and layered, big bramble, mulberry, blueberry and currant fruit, hints of spice, earth, minerals and coal dust. This will need time in bottle, but this is a very impressive wine that should make for long-term ageing.
